The role
What you’ll actually do
You’ll deliver Positive Behaviour Support in the most complex contexts we work in, with a caseload weighted towards your area of specialisation. You’ll be improving quality of life, reducing behaviours of concern, and working towards the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices. As a Specialist, you’ll also be the reference point for your area: the practitioner others consult, and the supervisor for the files your specialism covers.
Your responsibilities
- Lead the most complex casework in your area of specialisation, synthesising information from a wide range of sources
- Provide supervision and support to other practitioners in your area of expertise, at every level from Core to Advanced
- Act as the internal consultation point for complex files that touch your specialism, including plan reviews and case formulation
- Provide practice leadership across settings and stakeholder interactions, including chairing complex care team meetings, case conferences and practice forums
- Contribute your specialism to our internal training program, publication and professional development events
- Use advanced data analysis to monitor outcomes, identify service-wide challenges and implement solutions
- Shape strategic thinking in PBS and contribute to system change that enhances the rights of people with disability
- Maintain reflective practice, participating in supervision yourself, including peer supervision with other Specialist practitioners
What you’ll need
- Assessment as Specialist under the NDIS Commission PBS Capability Framework
- A recognised area of specialisation in or relevant to PBS, such as forensic practice, trauma-informed practice, dual diagnosis, a specific population or cultural group, or a specific age group or transition point
- Extensive experience delivering Positive Behaviour Support, including complex cases and restrictive practice contexts
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as Occupational Therapy, Developmental Education, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Nursing, Health Science, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counselling, or another NDIS-recognised qualification
- Demonstrated skills in supervising and mentoring other practitioners, particularly within your specialty
- High-level analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate behaviour support plans and clinical data across a service, not just a caseload
- Leadership in team settings, such as running case conferences, practice forums or service improvement projects
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Forensic
Participants involved with the justice system, and behaviour support in complex risk contexts.
Trauma
Trauma-informed practice, and support for participants whose behaviours are shaped by traumatic experience.
Dual diagnosis
Intellectual disability alongside mental health conditions, where two frameworks have to work as one.
Schizophrenia
Behaviour support for participants living with schizophrenia and psychosis-related presentations.
Bipolar disorder
Support built around mood disorder presentations and the episodic nature of the condition.
Age specialisms
Deep expertise in a specific stage of life, from early childhood through to older adults, including key transition points.
Your specialism works in two arenas at once. Internally, you’re the reference point: the practitioner colleagues consult, the supervisor for the files your area covers, and the voice for it in our training. Externally, it’s your platform in the field: our publication, webinars and PD events put your expertise in front of the 1,000+ practitioners who follow our work.

Where this role leads
Specialist is the summit. The path forward is depth.
The NDIS Commission recognises four practitioner levels, and because of our large, experienced team, practitioners can progress through all four here, with supervision completed in-house. At Specialist, growth means deepening your area, adding new specialisms, supervising across the team, and shaping how the field practises.
Core
Less complex participants, close coaching from a team leader, foundations of assessment and planning.
Proficient
Independent practice across a broader caseload, including participants with restrictive practices in place, plus guidance of Core practitioners.
Advanced
The most complex presentations, supervision of practitioners at all levels, and practice leadership across the organisation.
Specialist
All the qualities of Advanced, plus a recognised area of expertise, with supervision responsibility for that area across the whole team.
