FAQ

Positive Behaviour Support in Newcastle & the Central Coast, answered

What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?

Positive Behaviour Support is a way of working with people with mental illness and disabilities to improve their life with positive strategies and by addressing challenging behaviours. It focuses on understanding why a person behaves the way they do, then meeting those needs through communication strategies, environmental changes, meaningful relationships and better access to activities the person enjoys.

What suburbs do you service in Newcastle & the Central Coast?

We cover the Central Coast and Newcastle, from Gosford and Terrigal through Wyong and Lake Macquarie to Newcastle, Maitland and Port Stephens. The full suburb list is in the areas we service section on this page, and our capacity request form confirms your exact suburb within one business day.

How long is the wait for behaviour support in Newcastle & the Central Coast?

Our current Newcastle & the Central Coast wait times are published live on this page, synced with our central wait list. Your time on the waitlist begins once we receive a signed service agreement. Times are general and can vary weekly, so we recommend a customised capacity check for your suburb.

Which part of my NDIS plan pays for Positive Behaviour Support?

Funding is usually drawn from Capacity Building - Improved Relationships, which covers specialist behavioural intervention support including assessment hours, report writing and ongoing coaching. In some cases Improved Daily Living or Core funding can be used. Our intake team checks your plan and outlines the most efficient use of funds.

Do you work in Newcastle & the Central Coast schools?

Yes. We deliver positive behaviour support for learning in mainstream and specialist schools across Newcastle & the Central Coast and New South Wales, including teacher coaching, classroom observation and data-led workshops, aligned with each school's wellbeing framework and NSW Department of Education requirements.

Can you write a Behaviour Support Plan for autism?

Yes. Many of our practitioners have postgraduate study in autism and have developed hundreds of comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans for autistic participants, using neuro-affirming approaches throughout.

Can PBS help with trauma-related behaviours?

Yes. Our approach is trauma-informed, and many practitioners are specifically trained in trauma-informed practice. Practitioners look for environmental triggers, teach regulation skills and collaborate with psychologists so strategies are safe and respectful.

What is the difference between an Interim and a Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan?

A Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan is a detailed document meeting all NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, including functional assessment findings, proactive strategies and restrictive practice reduction steps. An Interim plan is shorter, used when urgent behaviours of concern need immediate mitigation while the full assessment continues.

How quickly will I see results?

Every participant and family is different, but most families notice early improvements within four to six weeks once strategies are implemented consistently, supported by baseline data, clear indicators and frequent reviews.

How often does a Behaviour Support Plan need to be reviewed?

At a minimum, any plan containing a regulated restrictive practice must be reviewed every 12 months, or earlier if the participant's circumstances change.

Do you provide services outside Newcastle & the Central Coast?

Yes. Insight PBS operates across four states. See our New South Wales page for every region we cover locally, or explore Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. If you move interstate, your practitioner coordinates a smooth handover to the next regional team.
